Everyone has an opinion about anything. And even if they don’t, they can easily borrow some from the internet. If everything is an iteration of past thoughts and ideas, how can we make sure our ideas are unique? To be precise, these late-night thoughts swirled inside my mind before seeing Damien Cifelli’s work and his universe. Tarogramma is the universe where Damien Cifelli’s creations reside in.
Edinburgh-born, London-based artist and writer Damien Cifelli create vibrant, colorful and soulful paintings about the people that live in Tarogramma. This land is sacred and elusive that was hidden from the people. The land doesn’t want to be discovered. But Cifelli explains that Tarogramma was discovered many times over the course of human history. And every piece of information about these land transferred through artifacts and images. The rich culture, colors, textures and everything led the researchers to their own aesthetic.
When you look at Damien Cifelli’s work you can sense the cultural references and homage to the past creatives that pave the way for us. And you can lost in the Tarogramma while admiring the quality of the art.
